Beach Brawl Bonanza: Breaking Baldur's Gate 3 with the Tavern Brawler Monk!

# Beach Brawl Bonanza: Breaking Baldur's Gate 3 wi...

Alright, party people, XenGamer.com is LIVE, and today, we're gonna do something beautiful. Something powerful. Something that involves PUNCHING! We're diving headfirst into Baldur's Gate 3 (PC version, of course, because we're classy) and crafting the ultimate early-game build: the Tavern Brawler Monk! And we're not just building any Monk; we're building a suplexing, goblin-yeeting, face-wrecking machine specifically designed to dominate the "Investigate the Beach" questline in Act 1.

Think sun-drenched sands littered with goblin corpses. The salty air hangs heavy with the scent of danger (and maybe a hint of barbeque from those tieflings trying to cook). Gnolls are feasting on…questionable meat. And you? You're a walking, talking, fist-flailing tornado of destruction. We're talking utterly ridiculous moments, like launching a goblin directly into a flock of seagulls using Tavern Brawler. This build will let you rescue those poor Tieflings, uncover hidden secrets, and, most importantly, have a blast doing it.

So, grab your Mountain Dew, slap on your headset, and let's get ready to break Baldur's Gate 3!

Step-by-step Tavern Brawler Monk Build Guide: Face-Breaking 101

Alright, let's get down to business. This isn't your grandma's Monk build (unless your grandma is secretly a cage fighter). This is all about maximizing unarmed damage, grappling prowess, and the sheer, unadulterated joy of throwing things (and people).

Race: Human or Githyanki? Choose Your Fighter!

For race, we have two solid contenders:

  • Human: Simple, effective, and that extra carry weight is a lifesaver. Let's face it, you're gonna be lugging around a lot of goblins after you're done with them.
  • Githyanki: Astral Knowledge is clutch for those moments when you accidentally body-slam a merchant and need to talk your way out of it. Plus, you know, they look cool.

Personally, I’m leaning Human for this run for the extra inventory space! We are gonna need it to hold all the… evidence.

Starting Class: Monk (No Brainer!)

This is a Monk build, so...Monk. Seriously, what else would you pick? A Bard who tries to serenade goblins to death? (Okay, maybe that's a fun side project for later).

Initial Attribute Allocation (Level 1-4): Gym Bro Cosplay

This is where we start crafting our masterpiece. We want a character that looks like a gym bro cosplaying as a monk. So, let's allocate those points:

  • Strength (16): This is your bread and butter. You need to be swole enough to suplex a Minotaur. We're talking serious lifting power. This is key for our throws, grapples, and improvised weapon shenanigans.
  • Wisdom (16): You gotta be wise enough not to suplex your own party member (usually). This boosts your AC (Unarmored Defense) and is important for some Monk abilities.
  • Dexterity (14): Gotta be nimble enough to dodge those pesky arrows and land those sweet, sweet punches.
  • Dump Intelligence: Who needs brains when you have biceps? (Okay, you need some brains, but we can compensate with a high Wisdom score.) Charisma is fine, but not as necessary as the others, so feel free to dump it.

The reasoning here is simple: Strength powers our attacks and grappling, Wisdom keeps us alive and kicking, and Dexterity prevents us from getting turned into a pin cushion. Tavern Brawler scales beautifully with Strength, making those improvised weapon throws and unarmed strikes absolutely devastating!

Level 4 Feat: Tavern Brawler (The Holy Grail of Face-Punching)

Close-up screenshot of the character equipping the Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo, showcasing the stat bonuses. The character's hand should be flexing dramatically.

THIS. IS. IT. The moment we've all been waiting for. At level 4, you absolutely, positively MUST take the Tavern Brawler feat. This feat is the key to unlocking the build's true potential. Here's why:

  • Adds your Strength modifier to attack and damage rolls with unarmed attacks and improvised weapons. That's double your Strength modifier to damage!
  • Gives you +1 to Strength or Constitution. We're boosting that Strength even higher!

With Tavern Brawler, your unarmed attacks and improvised weapons become absolute MONSTERS. You'll be one-shotting goblins left and right! A level 1 Monk with 16 Strength, after taking the Tavern Brawler feat will have 17 Strength. You will do base unarmed strike damage + 3 (+1 from level up) + 3 again because of Tavern Brawler. At level 1 that’s already 1d4 +6 damage, which is insane.

Multiclassing (Optional): A Pinch of Rogue for Extra Spice

Consider dipping 1-2 levels into Rogue (Thief subclass). I know, I know, it sounds crazy, but hear me out. The Thief subclass gives you an extra bonus action. What does that mean? MORE GRAPPLING! MORE SHOVING! MORE CHAOS!

In-game action shot of the Monk grappling a Gnoll and throwing it off a cliff. The Gnoll should have a look of utter terror on its face.

However, be warned! Multiclassing can be a slippery slope. You might become addicted to stealing spoons. You might start talking like a pirate. But the benefits…oh, the benefits! Being able to grapple two enemies at once and then throw them both into a conveniently placed puddle? Priceless.

Fighting Style: Unarmed Fighting Style (Monk)

This is a given, people! Don't even think about skipping this. It's like forgetting to put on pants before leaving the house – a major faux pas! The Unarmed Fighting Style from the Monk class is ESSENTIAL. At level 1, this fighting style adds 1d4 to your Unarmed Strike damage if you aren’t wearing armor or wielding a shield. At level 4, your unarmed strikes deal even more damage and allows you to use a bonus action attack after a melee attack.

Key Skills: Grappling, Treasure Hunting, and Avoiding Insanity

We want to be good at punching, but also at not being completely useless outside of combat. Focus on these skills:

  • Athletics: For grappling - obviously! Maximize this one.
  • Perception: For spotting ambushes and, more importantly, hidden treasure! You need to find those sweet, sweet loot drops.
  • Insight: For dialogue checks - sometimes you just need to convince someone you're not a crazy person after you’ve thrown 5 goblins at them.

Synergistic Early-Game Equipment: Gear Up for Glory!

Okay, so you've got the build, now let's get the gear to make it sing. These items are specifically chosen to enhance our unarmed combat and grappling prowess in the early game.

  • Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo: Located in a gilded chest in the basement of the Blighted Village. The chest is partially hidden behind some crates, near the alchemy table. These gloves add your Wisdom modifier to unarmed attacks. These look like they were crafted by a tiny, buff gnome. This is a massive boost to our damage output early on, making your unarmed strikes even more devastating.

  • Amulet of Lost Voices: Looted from a chest at the top of the ruined tower near the Blighted Village, guarded by some pesky ravens (time to introduce them to your fists!). Allows you to cast Speak with Animals. Now you can finally understand what that squirrel is saying about you. You can also now speak to the many animals present in the grove or beach, including the boar that gives you inspiration. Imagine chatting with a squirrel about the best place to find nuts (or maybe just punching it... streamer choice!).

  • Boots of Speed: Found in a chest near the windmill in the Blighted Village. You have to climb to the top of the mill and jump down into a hole in the floor. Gives you Dash as a bonus action for even more grappling goodness! This lets you zoom across the battlefield and deliver a swift kick to the face. More movement, more grapples, more fun!

  • Haste Helm: Sold by Dammon in the Druid Grove. When the wearer starts combat with less than 50% health, they gain 7 turns of Haste. It looks incredibly silly on your character. Use it when you are ready to die – but can’t.

Tips and Tricks: Pro Strats from a Pro…ish

Alright, listen up, rookies! Here are some tips and tricks to take your Tavern Brawler Monk gameplay to the next level:

  • Grappling Mastery: Grappling is your friend! Understand the mechanics inside and out. Advantage on Athletics checks is key, so use Guidance from Shadowheart or Bless from… well, someone who can cast Bless. Tripping enemies first makes them easier to grapple. Remember that grappling reduces an enemy’s movement to zero. This allows for easy target practice.

  • Environmental Exploitation: The beach is your playground! Shove enemies off cliffs or into chasms for instant kills. The satisfaction of watching a goblin plummet to its doom with a Wilhelm scream sound effect playing in your head is unmatched. Use terrain to your advantage to maximize damage output and control the battlefield.

Map of the

  • Improvised Weapon Shenanigans: Experiment with throwing everything! Barrels, goblins, even small rocks! Just be careful not to accidentally throw your party members…unless they're asking for it. Remember to factor in weight when throwing. The heavier the object, the less distance it can travel.

  • Consumable Abuse: Potions of Hill Giant Strength are your best friend! They temporarily boost your Strength, making you an unstoppable grappling god. Just be warned about the side effects, like suddenly developing an insatiable craving for rocks.

PC-Specific Notes: Tweaks for Maximum Mayhem

Since we're on PC, we can tweak a few things to enhance our experience.

  • Graphics Settings for Visibility: Turn off ambient occlusion and adjust gamma settings to improve visibility in dark caves and areas. Nobody wants to fumble around in the dark when they're trying to punch a mind flayer! Also, make sure to turn off motion blur, bloom, and vignette.

  • Mod Recommendations: NexusMods.com is your playground. Here are a few essentials:

    • Unarmed Combat Animations: This is a must. It adds more visually appealing unarmed attacks. I am particularly fond of the Dragon Kick and Haymaker animations.

Conclusion: Face-Punching Fun for Everyone!

With this build, you'll be able to solo entire encounters that would normally require careful planning and strategy! We're talking a 300% increase in damage output and survivability compared to a poorly optimized build.

The satisfaction of playing a Tavern Brawler Monk and dominating encounters with unarmed strikes, throws, and strategic grappling is unmatched. The potential for creating hilarious and memorable moments is endless.

Go forth and PUNCH ALL THE THINGS! And remember to subscribe for more tips and tricks on breaking Baldur's Gate 3! Now if you excuse me, I'm going to go punch a seagull. For science.
